RUJ (pronounced “rouge”/rooj) is an acronym for Red Umbrella Justice. Our name comes from the use of the red umbrella as a global symbol of sex workers’ rights and the ongoing fight against oppression and human rights abuses that sex workers face everyday.
RUJ is a sex workers’ rights group run by current and former sex workers, and allies. We formed in the late Spring of 2018 in response to the shutdown of Backpage and the SESTA/FOSTA bill being signed into law.
You can learn more about SESTA/FOSTA, the shutdown of Backpage, and its effects on sex workers in Resources.
